The
Sharpe Appreciation Society was formed in 1996 amid growing CONTACT DETAILS
demands
from fans wanting more information about the books,
TV
series, the people involved in making the series, the Napoleonic Sharpe
Appreciation Society
period,
weaponry, in fact anything remotely connected with Sharpe.
After finding there was no central point
of contact for fans, Chris Cobham
Clarke,
then secretary, made contact with Richard Rutherford-Moore
(historical
and technical advisor to the series) and wrote to the author KT11 9DE
Bernard Cornwell as well as
Malcolm Craddock, one of the producers.
With Richard Moore's help, Chris started
the fan club in July 1996
expecting 50 to 100 fans to join her. At it’s
height we had 4000 fans
across
the world! In May 1998, we held our first convention, where we sharpeappreciationsociety@sky.com
were
joined by Bernard Cornwell, Malcolm Craddock, Muir Sutherland
and
some of the actors involved in bringing the world of Sharpe to life
(including
some of whom hadn't worked on the series for years). It said
a
lot for the passion held for Sharpe by the fans as well as the actors
who
still felt something for Sharpe and came along to various events to
meet
fans.
We
are the official fan club, approved by the author, producers,
Television and Central Television.
THE END
OF AN ERA
Unfortunately
we have to inform you that with much regret the Sharpe
Appreciation
Society will no longer be able to support a membership
base
as we are no longer able to supply the services expected.
For most members, especially those
overseas, the only return
they
get for their money is the quarterly Bulletin, and this will no longer
be
available. We feel that with no new
episodes of Sharpe likely to be
made;
with the last film being put on permanent hold and Bernard
Cornwell
recently indicating that there would be no new Sharpe book
likely
until 2015 the content for a Bulletin is not available.
We consider it unfair to just rehash
previously seen material and
despite
Jeff Yang’s stirling work in supplying news about the various
Regiments
and their histories the subject of Richard Sharpe’s exploits
have
become a side issue!
The Society will continue to have a
website as we wish to continue
the support of the Sharpe’s Children Foundation. Also Sharpe
related
merchandise
will still be available through the website. The Sharpe
Roadshows
will be fewer as attendencies have been much reduced.
Their
locations will be advertised on the website.
